The Great Alchemie Disaster was an Alchemie Fyre accident.
The Great Alchemie Disaster was caused when Marcellus Pye tried De-Naturing The Two-Faced Ring the first time. Julius Pike, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard at the time, interrupted and distracted Marcellus. This lead to The Great Alchemie Disaster, causing many to die on that day. Fyre spread throughout the tunnels under the Castle and was only stopped by the freezing of the tunnels.
From the description, the disaster bears some resemblance to a nuclear meltdown.
