Jenna Heap[1] is the daughter of the deceased Queen Cerys and the over-seas merchant Milo Banda. Her birth name is believed to be Mathilda, after her grandmother, but she was named Jenna, after Jenna Crackle, Silas Heap's mother. Because her mother died while her father was at sea, and she had no home, Jenna was rescued by Marcia Overstrand and entrusted to Silas Heap and his wife, Sarah, when her mother was assassinated. Jenna was raised as a Heap, unbeknownst to her true parentage until her tenth birthday. In Fyre, after coming of age, Jenna is crowned Queen of the Castle.

Biography[]

Birth and escape from assassination[]

Jenna was born on MidWinter Feast day. There was a Welcome Ceremony to commemorate her birth. Alther Mella and Marcia Overstrand (Alther's then-apprentice) were the only known people to attend. This, tragically, was also the day her mother died, as a Custodian sporting the robes of an Assassin, mistaken by Marcia as some sort of messenger, entered the Queen's chambers with a drive to exterminate the royal line. Along with a few normal lead bullets, he brought two Silver Bullets; one with IP (Infant Princess) etched into it, meant to kill her, (Though it killed Iona Pot later) and another with Q (Queen) etched into it, made for the Queen's assassination. The Queen's found its mark, but Alther Mella, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard at the time, cast a spell to protect Jenna, but inevitably was also shot. Marcia spoke with Alther after he was wounded while continuing his spell. Once Alther died, Marcia took Jenna and ran for it. Jenna was then placed in a mound of snow by Marcia and made sure to be discovered by Silas Heap soon after, who unofficially adopted her. Her birth mother, Queen Cerys, was the last queen up to date. Jenna then grew up in the Ramblings as a Heap.

Life in the Ramblings[]

Jenna grew up in the Heap's cupboard and was as loved as Septimus, who was missing (thought to be dead). Jenna loved her cupboard, and when unable to sleep she would gaze out her window and watch boat drift by in the Moat. It is suggested that all of her birthdays are celebrated with the Heaps, as her tenth birthday is. She attended the Orange School, aka the East Side Third School (during DomDaniel's reign). She lived in Room 16, Corridor 223, or the Big Red Door, at There and Back Again Row. She enjoyed playing princess, ironically, with her red-head friend, Bo Tenderfoot. She and Bo also found an old blind cat once.

Time on the run[]

On the morning of Jenna's tenth birthday, Marcia Overstrand came to the Heaps with the news that an Assassin was coming for Jenna. Rushed out by Marcia, she was taken to the Wizard Tower. On the way, they found a Young Army Expendable in the snow and dug him up. They brought him along. Soon after reaching Marcia's rooms, Silas showed up with Jenna's brother, Nicko, and their wolfhound, Maxi. The Assassin came but, after she was slain by a Magykal ThunderFlash, they escaped down the Rubbish Chute. They then ended up in the care of their great-aunt Zelda Zanuba Heap, more commonly known as Aunt Zelda. She meets the Young Army Expendable whose name is Boy 412. Jenna receives a present from her father, Silas Heap, which is a living pet rock, and she names him Petroc Trelawney. While in the tunnels under Draggen Island, she discovers an egg-shaped, emerald-colored stone, and gives it to Boy 412. During the Big Freeze, all is well, but then she meets the Dragon Boat and discovers her ability to communicate with her. Boy 412 becomes the Dragon Master when he finds the ancient Dragon Ring. Jenna is also in communication with her mother Sarah Heap, through a Message Rat named Stanley. DomDaniel arrives with his ship, The Vengeance, and Jenna, Boy 412, and Nicko tries to fend him off with the Dragon Boat. In the end, DomDaniel is Consumed by the marsh Brownies. Then, much to everyone's surprise, Boy 412 is revealed to be Septimus Heap, the real seventh child of Silas Heap.

Returning to the Castle and living in the Palace[]

Later, Jenna moved out of her house in the Ramblings and invited her adoptive parents Sarah and Silas Heap to the Palace. She got a horse, as well as a tutor, and was enrolled in an education system. Jenna lived peacefully for a year and a half.

Kidnapped by Simon and her escape[]

During the book Flyte, Jenna was kidnapped by Simon for DomDaniel. She was locked in a room in the Observatory but escaped overnight using a chocolate charm given to her by Septimus. She used to chocolate charm on the locked door and then used a bed spring to cut out of it. She then made a lantern of glow grubs and escaped to the Port on Simon’s horse, Thunder.

Septimus's kidnap and on the search for him[]

Search for Nicko[]

When Septimus was trapped in another time, Jenna, Nicko, Marcia, and Spit Fyre went to look for him. When they met Snorri, she helped. When they found Septimus and were about to go back into their own time, Nicko went off to look for Snorri. Jenna was concerned but thought Snorri was the only reason he wasn't there.

The Queste[]

At first, they did not realize they were going on the Queste because Septimus Heap was scared to tell them that he had accidentally taken the Questing Stone from an Inhabited Hildegarde. During the Queste, Septimus charmed the compass Milo Banda gave Jenna to help them find The House of Foryx, they followed the watch to a house where they opened gifts from Sam, the gifts contained what Septimus said was Witches Brew and ate fish. The next morning they found Ephaniah outside in the snow, freezing. They took him inside but Septimus and Beetle found a ring on his pinky and dragged Jenna outside. At first, she was confused and demanded to know why they had to leave Ephaniah inside, after explaining, they went back in and he was already gone. After a while, they reached a bridge where they had to deal with the Toll-Man who was being inhabited by a Thing.

The House of Foryx[]

They reached The House of Foryx where Jenna demanded The Right Of The Riddle. Jenna thought it was funny that the Riddler pronounced it 'The Wight Of The Widdle' but she got almost all the questions right, on the last one she tried to look at her map for help. The Riddler told her that cheating wasn't allowed, so Septimus got the last question. They found Nicko and Snorri and got out.

Return from the Queste[]

After they returned, they got Spit Fyre to carry Ephaniah in his claws.

Later life[]

Characteristics[]

Heritage[]

Jenna is the single child of the late Queen Cerys and Milo Banda, which makes her the only heir to assume the throne. Her royal blood enables her to see the Door to The Queen's Room and fixes her eyes at a deep violet even after learning Magyk. Originally, Jenna is unwilling to be Queen, but she eventually embraces her heritage and accepted the throne.

Etymology[]

Jenna is very close to Jennifer, a common Western name. It is of English Origin and means white.[citation needed] Jenna also means Small Bird in Arabic.[citation needed]

Physical attributes[]

Jenna has always been slightly small for her age, and she has light skin. She is also strong and fast built. She has long, dark hair and violet eyes.

Abilities and skills[]

Jenna is not Magykal, but she has picked up some Magyk while in the company of people who are. When Jenna, Marcia, Septimus (then known as Boy 412), Silas, and Nicko escape to the Marram Marshes and stay with Aunt Zelda, Jenna learns Basyk Magyk. Because of her royal heritage, her eyes stayed purple instead of becoming Wizard eyes. When Marcia is kidnapped, Jenna, Nicko, and Septimus boarded DomDaniel's ship, The Vengence, and Jenna used her UnSeen spell.

Jenna was made into a witch by Marissa after being captured by the Port Witch Coven.[2]

Possessions[]

Relationships[]

  • Septimus Heap: She spends much of her time with Septimus. Whether it's up in the air acting as Spit Fyre's Navigator or wandering the Palace talking, there is no one she'd rather be with.
  • Bo Tenderfoot: She is Jenna's old friend when she used to live in the Ramblings. Still, they are close friends.
  • Nicko Heap: Since they went to Aunt Zelda's they have gotten much closer.
  • O. Beetle Beetle: Beetle and she are good friends, but it seems, Beetle has a crush on Jenna. Jenna does not know this, but, to many others, it is obvious. In Fyre, Beetle seems to think of Jenna only as a friend, and is taking his job of Chief Hermetic Scribe very seriously, although Jenna is starting to have feelings for him. At the end of Fyre, Beetle's old feelings are returning/have returned. In Pathfinder, which takes place seven years after the Septimus Heap series, it seems that Beetle and Jenna are together.

Family[]

SeptHeapIllo QueenCerys

Queen Cerys, Jenna's mother

Even if she was only adopted, she views the Heap family as her family rather than her biological father, Milo Banda. Jenna gets confused about her family, but Nicko tells her that they are her family since she grew up with them and they raised her.

Parents[]

Siblings[]

Simon, Sam, Edd, Erik, Jo-Jo, Nicko and Septimus Heap (Adoptive)

If her mother had not been shot and killed the day Jenna was born, she would have had two younger sisters and one brother.

  • Aunt Zelda - Great Aunt (Adoptive)

Trivia[]

  • Jenna had a pet rock named Petroc Trelawney, given by Silas Heap. This compelled her to find a rock for Septimus, the "rock" she found turned out to be Spit Fyre's Egg.
  • Her real name is likely to be Mathilda. On the reunion of Jenna with her birth mother, Cerys, Cerys' thoughts relate that she finds it difficult to think of her daughter as being named Jenna, as she originally named her after her grandmothers - Milo Banda's mother's name is unknown, but Cerys' mother is known to be Queen Mathilda, and in a vision, Jenna had of what it would have been like had her mother not been killed, she saw her name as being 'longer and more old-fashioned'; therefore, it seems plausible that her given birth name was Mathilda. If not, then it is definitely her second name.
  • However, in an Ask Angie blog, Jenna's middle name is revealed to have her mother's and grandmother's names. Thus Jenna's middle name is rightfully been Cerys-Matthilda, and the first name may have been Milo Banda's mother's name.
